Great skirt, Marty! Fan-designed fashion makes couture geeky

This year's San Diego Comic-Con now seems like a distant dream of celebrities, comics, costumes and chaos, but in the middle of the geek gridlock many of us have come to love, there was a fashion show like no other.

Her Universe, Hot Topic and Nerdist teamed up to show off geek chic couture created by the fans themselves, and modeled by both celebrities and well-known cosplayers in a one-of-a-kind nerdtacular runway show.

Now comes word that geeky fashionistas will be able to wear clothes by some of the featured fan designers before long.

"We are working with the winners, Amy Beth Christenson and Andrew MacLaine, right now on designs," Ashley Eckstein, founder of Her Universe clothing, told Crave this week. "It's very exciting and their designs are amazing. Fans can expect to buy their designs at Hot Topic in the spring of 2015."

The fashion show highlight reel showcases 36 designers and their pop-culture-inspired fashions shown off by various models including first "America's Next Top Model" winner and cosplayer Adrianne Curry.

Dresses paid homage to "The Hunger Games," "Divergent," "Back to the Future," "The Hobbit" "Doctor Who," "Star Wars," Metroid, Pokemon, X-Men, Iron Man, the Fantastic Four, Thor and more.

The show also served as a design competition where two winners chosen (one by the audience and one by the panel of judges) at the fashion show won the opportunity to design a collection with Her Universe to be sold at Hot Topic.

The judges' winner was Amy Beth Christenson for her "Back to the Future"-inspired ensemble called "Great Skirt, Marty." The audience winner was "Once Upon a Time"-inspired gown "Regina's Curse" by Andrew MacLaine.

Judges included Tarina Tarantino (fashion designer); Chloe Dykstra (actress on "Heroes of Cosplay"); Justine Ezarik (YouTube star iJustine); Hilly and Hannah Hindi (stars of "The Hillywood Show"); Cindy Levitt (Hot Topic senior VP of merchandising and marketing); Tara Sinclair (Lucasfilm senior manager of Softlines); and Lacey Prince (Lucasfilm product development, fashion and accessories).

For fans who may have missed their chance to participate and see the fashion show in person, Eckstein promises there are more to come.

"In developing the Her Universe fashion show, it was always our goal to make this an annual show," Eckstein told Crave. "Geek-inspired fashion is not a trend, it's a fashion category that's here to stay. We look forward to many more geek couture fashion shows for years to come."
